Are you looking for an exterior banner delivered in the UK? Here are your questions answered…

What type of material is the banner made of? Exterior grade 440gsm PVC, waterproof and durable.

What colours can I have on the banner? The banner is printed by a full-colour wide-format machine, so many colours can be used.

What about hems and eyelets? Our banners are fully finished with eyelets and hems as standard.

Are there any other types of fixings available? The banner can be trimmed to allow stapling or created with pole pockets for hanging.

How long does it take? We can have a banner ready for you within 48 working hours and even within 24 working hours. Sometimes even on the same day.

Do you deliver? We deliver banners free to the mainland UK.

What about the artwork? You can supply artwork in high res pdf format or we can create artwork for free. Basic artwork is free.

How big can pvc banners be? Up to a massive 5 metres high and with almost indefinite length. These sizes can also be seamed together.

What about windy areas? We recommend mesh that has tiny holes in it but in high winds, if installed poorly, these can be damaged.

Installing your Banner.

Please note our banners are made from 450gsm PVC and if installed properly, may last for many years. However, we cannot guarantee that any banner can withstand windy areas, storms, gales or other poor conditions.

It is up to the installer to affix the banners properly in a safe area. Banners are best installed onto a completely flat surface with screws and washers to be flush as possible. If installed onto a fence, the wind will push behind them, creating a “sail” effect, ripping the banner.

We are based in Glasgow, all our work is by e-mail and telephone. We do not have a drop-in facility. If you order before Midday you may be able to get your banner the next day.

The Different kinds of Banner Printing.

Solvent Printing – This term is used to describe any ink that is not water-based. Piezo inkjet printers whose inks use petroleum or a petroleum by-product such as acetone like carrier liquid. “Eco-Solvent” inks usually contain glycol esters or glycol ether esters and are slower drying.

The resulting prints are waterproof and may be used to print directly on uncoated vinyl and other media as well as rigid substrates such as Painted/Coated Metal, Foam Board and PVC.

The solvents soften the base material and allow the ink pigments to mechanically latch on to the chemically etched surface. Certain ink manufacturers have different bite based on what solvent carriers they use. Which is what makes solvent ink prints more durable than aqueous inks. However, solvent inks give off a strong odour or fumes when drying, as the carrier fluid dissipates through applied heat from the printer’s plate.

There are various levels of solvent ink ranging from “True or Full Solvent” to “Medium/Mild Solvent” all the way down to “Eco-Solvent”. The fumes and odour levels decrease accordingly and so does the surface etch of the base material.

Full to Medium/Mild Solvents require fume extraction to be considered safe in the working environment. Most Eco-Solvents can be used in an office environment with minimal or tolerable odour levels.

What are our Banners Made From?

PVC waterproof flexible material Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the world’s third most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer, after polyethene and polypropylene. About 40 million tonnes are produced per year.

PVC comes in two basic forms: rigid (sometimes abbreviated as RPVC) and flexible. The rigid form of PVC is used in construction for pipe and in profile applications such as doors and windows. It is also used in making bottles, non-food packaging, and cards (such as bank or membership cards).

It can be made softer and more flexible by the addition of plasticizers, the most widely used being phthalates. In this form, it is also used in plumbing, electrical cable insulation, imitation leather, flooring, signage, phonograph records, inflatable products, and many applications where it replaces rubber.

With cotton or linen, it is used to make the canvas. The ink we use to print These inks consist mainly of acrylic monomers with an initiator package.

After printing, the ink is cured by exposure to strong UV light. Ink is exposed to UV radiation where a chemical reaction takes place where the photo-initiators cause the ink components to cross-link into a solid.

Typically a shuttered mercury-vapour lamp or UV LED is used for the curing process. Curing processes with high power for short periods of times (microseconds) allow curing inks on thermally sensitive substrates. UV inks do not evaporate, but rather cure or set as a result of this chemical reaction. No material is evaporated or removed, which means about 100% of the delivered volume is used to provide colouration. This reaction happens very quickly, which leads to instant drying that results in a completely cured graphic in a matter of seconds.

A Fast Printing Process.

This also allows for a very fast print process. As a result of this instant chemical reaction, no solvents penetrate the substrate once it comes off the printer, which allows for high-quality prints. The advantage of UV-curable inks is that they “dry” as soon as they are cured, they can be applied to a wide range of uncoated substrates, and they produce a very robust image.

Disadvantages are that they are expensive, require expensive curing modules in the printer, and the cured ink has a significant volume and so gives a slight relief on the surface. Though improvements are being made in the technology, UV-curable inks, because of their volume, are somewhat susceptible to cracking if applied to a flexible substrate. As such, they are often used in large “flatbed” printers, which print directly to rigid substrates such as plastic, wood or aluminium where flexibility is not a concern.
